The update revealed that Gibson holds two more years on his contract but it seems the ducks are willing to retain some salary in order to receive a good return on the longtime netminder.
Several hockey pundits have questions that are circulating around the goaltending of the Oilers where many feel the Oilers may need to pick up another goaltender that would help put them over the top as the team is in a win now mode and has the strength to go to their second Stanley Cup finals in two seasons.
Whether the Oilers add a second goaltender to make a tandem or trading current starter Stuart Skinner remains an option. Gibson who is now 31 years old, holds a captain of $6.4 million and will likely seek an extension after the seasons over.
It's been long rumored that Gibson would like a change of scenery as he has been in Anaheim his entire career but as the team has dropped in terms of talent and in the standings hockey insiders think he will want to go to a contender.
Anaheim backup goalie Lucas Dostal seems to be ready for the number one job as he has put up good numbers this year considering the state of the Ducks.
The Oilers would likely need to send a goaltender back to Anaheim if a trade word transpire and they would likely be Calvin Pickard or potentially Skinner as he will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman is currently evaluating his talent and with the Four Nations faceoff approaching in the next week and 1/2, it will give his team a chance to scour the league and potentially speak to other general managers who may want to craft the deal prior to the March trade deadline.
That seems to be a case across the NHL as several deals have already taken place and will likely continue up until the 7th of March.
