The Edmonton Oilers next big piece of offseason business will be signing a franchise altering contract with Leon Draisaitl, and new reports suggest a deal is close to finished.

According to the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, who has correctly broken a number of Oilers stories recently, Draisaitl will be re-signing for 8 years, between $13.3-13.5M. His full value could be seen around $14.5M, but he's willing to take a discount that will still make him the highest paid player in the NHL.

This is an extremely positive update for the Oilers and their fans. Locking down Leon Draisaitl to a long term contract, especially on a discount will be a sign that McDavid will follow shortly afterward. Especially after their devastating loss in the Cup Final last year, this team knows they're so close to becoming champions - and will be able to contend for multiple Stanley Cups together. It seems like the promise of winning is going to keep the Oilers superstars together.

Hopefully, the Oilers formally announce a contract within the near future. Draisaitl has come a long way from being a controversial top three pick, to arguably the second best player in the entire NHL. Now with countless 100 point seasons, making Leon Draisaitl a lifelong Oiler will be the franchises' biggest move in decades - until next season where it's Connor McDavid's turn.
