In a recent article on The Hockey News, Quenneville was connected to coaching four NHL teams who currently have a head coach on the hot seat, and could be replaced early next season. Quenneville was connected to the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Utah Hockey Club, and the Calgary Flames.
Quenneville could be an ideal fit with the Flames as a spot for himself to get back into the NHL. If the Flames take another step back next season and wish to ignite a spark in the dressing room, Ryan Huska could be on the hot seat. The Flames would then maybe rebuilding for years, which would be a fine opportunity for Quenneville to prove himself in the NHL again.
Quenneville is one of the winningest coaches in NHL history, having won three Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks over 11 seasons with the team. He's also coached the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, and most recently the Florida Panthers. His total career record is an astonishingly positive 969-572-150, only behind Scotty Bowman for total wins.
Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville's lack of action after receiving reports of abuse from a player caused both to be banned from the NHL in 2021. After working on themselves extensively in workplace programs and assault survivors, they were reinstated by Gary Bettman on July 1st. Many fans and media members still doubt the decision to reinstate the two - especially Oilers fans after hiring Stan Bowman - but it doesn't appear it will stop teams from hiring them.
In recent years head coaches have been hired and fired at an astonishing rate, and there will surely be more early this year that fire their coaches to try to shake up the locker room. Quenneville will certainly have more opportunities to get back into the NHL, and it may not take long for it to happen.
