Oilers draft top ranked goaltender with second round pick
Moments ago at the NHL draft, the Edmonton Oilers selected Eemil Vinni, an 18 year old goaltender from Vantaa, Finland.
Vinni was ranked as the best European goaltender in this year's draft by NHL Central Scouting. In the second highest professional Finnish league, Vinni payed 37 games and posted a 2.72 GAA and .891 save percentage. The 6'2 goaltender utilizes his bigger frame in net, but is also known for his athleticism and ability to make desperation saves in net. Some scouts described him as over-active, but that's something that can be corrected with coaching.
The Oilers goaltending position has always been a one of weakness through recent years, but now the organization is beginning to rack up depth. Between the 25 year old Stuart Skinner, 23 year old Olivier Rodrigue, and now Eemil Vinni, the Oilers goaltending position is beginning to look locked down for the foreseeable future.
Some fans are even doubting drafting a goaltender with the second round pick due to the Oilers goaltending depth. However the old hockey adage of Goalies being voodoo remains true, and it's never bad to stock up on young goalies with potential.
