This lines up with previous reports from Bob Stauffer who has also suggested a deal with Leon Draisaitl may be imminent. The Oilers were willing to give Draisaitl a blank cheque on this contract, so settling for only $13.5M is a very team-friendly deal. Previous insiders have suggested that Draisaitl could command just above $14M.
By all reports, Leon Draisaitl
is willing to sign an extension with the Oilers, and even potentially at a discounted rate. The one sticking point however will be the contract's term. David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period has suggested Draisaitl's contract may look like the Auston Matthews deal, around only 4 years. Draisaitl will be 30 years old when his next contract kicks in, so maybe signing a short term deal now allows him to secure one more long term deal as he ages.
With plenty of negative press surrounding the team after the Bowman hiring, announcing an extension for Leon Draisaitl would be a great positive for the Edmonton Oilers. Hopefully a deal is reached in the next week or so, well before training camp begins to avoid any more rumours of his departure.
