After the recent Sabres trade, the Oilers now have a new grade A prospect to add to the cabinet. Matthew Savoie isn't just any prospect, but is a prospect who chose the Oilers over any other team. Savoie has a childhood history with the Oilers and seems ecstatic to be a part of the team.
Savoie says that he used to be a huge Oilers fan and used to go to many games. That's the dream for most children growing up playing hockey, is to grow up and play for your childhood team.
Oilers fans should be just as happy to have him on, as Savoie could not be playing better than he currently is. It's insane that the Sabres only took two years to move on from their 2022 9th overall pick, let alone while he is playing so amazingly in the WHL.
Savoie spent parts of the 23-24 all over the place, with 6 games on Buffalo's AHL affiliate and 32 games played split between two WHL teams. He played amazing in both leagues, recording 71 points in 34 games played. Savoie has played amazing at every level throughout his career, putting up exceptional numbers during his junior career as well.
Savoie is going to be a very good player, and automatically jumps up to be the best prospect that the Oilers have. Jeff Jackson added this trade to cap off an already fantastic offseason, and grabbing a top tier propsect is a great way to extend their window and keep players around.
