According to Vince Mercogliano of SNYTV there has been an increase in scouts being spotted across the arena as teams get a look at the players that have been named available by Rangers general manager Chris Drury which include Chris Kreider, Jacob Trouba, K'Andre Miller and Kaapo Kakko
The Oilers have been scouting the league for upgrades on their secondary scoring and their defence core which has underperformed for most of the season.
Many of the players mentioned would be a huge upgrade for the Oilers but would require a significant cost heading back to New York along with the money in money out situation as both teams are close to the salary cap.
The likelihood of the Rangers taking on salary is quite small as the Rangers believe one big trade may solve all their problems where the Oilers are looking for long term.
A player like Jacob Trouba who has a vicious side to him along with toughness and holds the covetted right hand shot would bolster the Oilers blue line. He has two years remaining on his contract after this season is complete and there have been indications that he would like to leave New York at some point soon.
A lower cost option who could upgrade their bottom 6 would be Kaapo Kaako. The former second overall pick has not lived up to expectations since he had been drafted however a change of scenery could spark what has been missing for several years.
He currently holds contract of $2.4 million for one season and it would only take a draft pick or a prospect to head back to the Rangers to make the deal work.
No matter the case, the Rangers appear to be ready to make a deal and the Oilers along with many other teams in the NHL are listening to what they have to say and may take a bite at an early mid season trade that could be a blockbuster.
