In a recent episode of OilersNow, Stauffer brought up the possibility that the Edmonton Oilers would trade to improve their defence if they lose Philip Broberg to the St. Louis Blues offer sheet. Stauffer mentioned Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson as the target.
In Stauffer's thinking, the Oilers would send a first round draft pick, the second round pick they would receive in compensation for losing Broberg, and Brett Kulak for the Andersson. Calgary will likely be rebuilding again this season, and would be seeking a draft pick package in return for any assets they're selling off.
Andersson is a talented 27 year old right shot defender, with two years left remaining on his contract that pays him a very manageable $4.5M. In the last two seasons combined, Andersson has scored an impressive 20 goals and 88 points while only missing seven games. On a very poor Flames team, he's been able to still make a positive impact on the ice on both offence and defence. He would be an incredible fit for the Oilers, likely anchoring the second pairing alongside Darnell Nurse.
No matter what, the Edmonton Oilers are guaranteed to make some kind of roster move in the next seven days, and there will likely be at least one trade. It would be extremely tough to match the offer for Philip Broberg over $4M, but losing his abilities in the defence corps next season would also be a significant blow. If the Oilers do miss out on Broberg, look for the team to make an aggressive deal to acquire a top four defenceman.
