Coffey was drafted by the Oilers in 1980, in the first round six pick overall. During his time with the organization, he won 3 Stanley cups and was branded one of the best defenseman in Oilers history. During his career, he played 1409 games scoring 396 goals with 1135 assists for 1531 points and was a + 298. He also had 1802 penalty minutes.
This season has been a remarkable turn around for the Oilers as the team was 30th out of 32 heading into late November and had zero ability to win any games. Coffey along with rookie head coach Kris Knoblauch replaced Dave Manson and Jay Woodcroft which completely changed the Oilers fortunes, and they skyrocketed through the standings and were only a few points behind the Canucks for the Pacific division at the end of the season.
The Oilers will have a chance to close their series against the Dallas Stars this evening has the team is currently leading 3-2 in the series. If the Oilers are successful, it'll be the first time, they have been back in the Stanley Cup finals since 2006.
