David Staples of the Edmonton Journal has predicted that the Edmonton Oilers will regret not allowing Philip Broberg to be coached by Oilers legendary defenseman Paul Coffey as the team may lose him to an offer sheet.

Several days ago, the St Louis Blues had put an offer sheets to Broberg which he signed to a two-year deal worth $4.5 million per season. The Oilers have seven days to match and as Staples states, the track record of Coffey and how he has improved the team's offence on the defence has been remarkable.

As soon as Paul Coffey became assistant coach there was a noticeable difference in how the team played and how they handled the puck in their own end.

This allowed the team to skyrocket in the standings and went within a few points of the Vancouver Canucks for the Pacific Division after being 30th of 32 teams last November.

It's likely that Broberg would move up in the lineup and become the top four defensemen that the team has hoped ever since the day they drafted him. He even could become a top two defenseman especially with Coffey guiding him.

The Oilers have some cap gymnastics to accomplish to fit everyone under the cap which includes keeping Broberg. Some have suggested that the Oilers will be able to put Evander Kane on long term injury reserve as it's likely he will undergo surgery prior to the season beginning.

With the clock ticking, the team will need to decide soon, and I would hope they would choose to keep Broberg as good defensemen are hard to come by.
