In a new interview with Amazon Prime Sports, NHL players were asked to say something nice about their biggest rival teams. Oilers superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were asked to compliment the Calgary Flames, and some rivals were asked to compliment the Oilers.
Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes and Stars forward Wyatt Johnson had very similar answers about their rival Edmonton Oilers - they're just a really good team. While most other players tried to think of a funny and backhanded way to compliment the rivals, both Hughes and Johnston honestly just had to pay their respects to the total domination of the Oilers at times.
With the Oilers run in last year's playoffs and in years past, consistently making it through the early rounds, players around the league have Edmonton pegged as a team to beat each time. Rival teams thinking highly of the Oilers only means they'll game plan harder for them, so the Oilers need to be even better to keep dominating like last year.
Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid both provided some compliments to the Flames too. Draisaitl reluctantly said the Flames will soon have a nice new arena when they update the Saddledome, and Connor McDavid honestly said he likes the Flames jerseys. If McDavid said it, Oilers fans can admit it too: the Flames do have really great jerseys at the moment.
Ahead of a matchup tonight against the rival Calgary Flames on the road, maybe the Oilers compliments ease the rivalry a bit tonight. Fans watching certainly won't hope so - they may not even like these compliments at all! Still, when the players hop on the ice, they enter another different competitive gear.
