According to Jason Gregor, scouts have reached out to say that Broberg will be a top four defenceman as of next year, but he will continue to develop into a star player.
Broberg was drafted 8th overall by the Oilers in 2019, and has now played 101 career games by the age of 23. His appearances toward the end of the season and in the playoffs were his best yet. In the highest stakes situations, Broberg was confidently moving the puck to the forwards, and played a style of game that seamlessly fit with the team. He's proven all that he can at the AHL level too, scoring 38 points in 49 games with the Condors last season.
Broberg is a clear lock to make the Oilers roster out of training camp next season, but if he can continue to develop and play as a solid top four defenceman next year, that will be a massive boost to the roster. Cody Ceci and Brett Kulak have been floated in trade rumours, so it seems the front office is also set on a bigger role for Broberg next year.
Of course, Philip Broberg also needs to be re-signed. He's currently a restricted free agent and it seems that a deal will easily be reached by both sides, without threat of an offer sheet. Hopefully the Oilers can lock him up to a value contract with term, and Broberg could be a significant piece of a cup-winning roster.
