Oilers starting goaltender Stuart Skinner spoke today to Daily Hive's Preston Hodgkinson About a rare equipment change that shares the path former Oilers goaltender Mike Smith.
Skinner decided to ditch his white gear including his pads and settled for two brand-new sets of pads including a set that dawns the darker blue and orange that the Oilers home jerseys have. He told the daily hive that he was looking to add some fun to his season besides playing another year with the Oilers.
Rare move by Skinner with Goaltenders keeping their equipment
«I just really wanted to enjoy myself on kind of making two different sets, a home and away set, just to have fun,» Skinner said. «It obviously saves the gear too. I'm not using the one pair every practice, every game, so they don't break down as quickly.
«Just having a little fun this year.» - Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner
Skinner stated that he also switched to two sets of pads as they would not break down as often as he would use one set the entire year including practice. He also felt that he wanted his pads to match the colours of the team as much as possible as it looks clean and fresh.
«I love a full set of coloured gear,» Skinner admitted. «Trying to have everything match with the jerseys is always nice, it looks clean.»
Many Oilers fans may recognize these colours especially the home pads as they hold a striking resemblance to the pads used by former Oilers goaltender Mike Smith.
Skinner spoke about that as well and stated that he did not do this on purpose as it was more his own personal preference rather than being nostalgic.
«It's exactly the same [as Smith's],» Skinner said with a smile. «It might've been subconscious, to be honest. I made it myself and then I looked at some of the pictures walking down the aisle in Rogers Place and I saw his, and they were the exact same, it's just mine are royal instead of navy.
«It's pretty funny, no consultation, no talking, nothing like that, it must've been subconscious.» - Stuart Skinner
Skinner looking to improve in the second half of the season
The 26-year-old has been fairly steady over the course of this season even though the team was struggling early on. Through 28 games, he has a record of 16-9-3 with the goals against of 2.77 and a save percentage of .898 with one shutout.
Skinner hopes to rebound his numbers has the Oilers begin their second half of the season and hope to solidify a playoff spot within the coming months.
