Salary cap experts at PuckPedia are correcting a report made on the Oilers making a blunder with Evander Kane's LTIR cap space usage. PuckPedia is now saying Edmonton made no mistakes.

PuckPedia previously reported the Oilers placed Kane on LTIR before the season, meaning they couldn't access accrued cap space - which turned out to be false.

NHL Salary Cap Experts at PuckPedia Correct Report on Oilers Trade Deadline Cap Space

Edmonton has made roster moves to keep a thin roster all season, for the purpose of accruing cap space for the Oilers daily.

According to PuckPedia's new report today, the Oilers will in fact be able to access their accrued cap space and Evander Kane's LTIR space if he misses the rest of the regular season.

Therefore, if Kane is out for year & #LetsGoOilers use LTIR to exceed cap, they would have his $5.125M LTIR pool available + what's been accrued. As of today, $234K is accrued, which is $472K annual cap hit if utilized today or $1.07M at deadline.

Apologies for error below LTIR is complex, & this was a nuance we haven't come across that made a significant impact.

If Evander Kane is out for the rest of the regular season, then the Oilers will be able to add $6.195 in annual cap hit at the trade deadline.

The NHL salary cap is an incredibly complex mechanism, and mistakes will happen even from the experts running services like PuckPedia.

Edmonton Oilers Cleared of Salary Cap Blunder with Evander Kane

It's quite cool actually that the Oilers are navigating a salary cap situation never before seen in NHL history. Hopefully, they're able to benefit by adding the most salary as they possibly can in trade.

Evander Kane's injury itself is incredibly complicated as well. The Oilers forward was already rehabbing from abdominal surgery for 6 injuries, and now has just underwent knee surgery, pushing back his timeline.

At this point, it's still unknown when Evander Kane will return to the Oilers lineup. All Edmonton can do is properly manage their roster and his all-important salary, to steer their team towards a Stanley Cup this year.
