Emberson was eligible to sign a contract as of January 1st, insider Elliotte Friedman recently reported a deal will come around the new year.
There's still not details of the salary of the contract, but Matheson believes the Oilers will be able to lock up Emberson to a three year contract at least.
Now with multiple reports suggesting an Emberson extension, it seems like a deal could be completed very soon.
When he came to the Oilers via trade from the San Jose Sharks this offseason, Emberson was named as a player with potential to have a breakout year. He hasn't been a star, but he's settled in nicely to a third pair and PK role and has a future on the team.
OilersNation has speculated that Emberson could get locked up to a very low salary of $1.6M a season.
There's not much risk with a salary of only $1.6M, and with less than 70 NHL games experience, it could be an attractive offer for Emberson too.
The NHL's salary cap is projected to increase by over $20M, so it is possible that Emberson could command a little more salary with that in mind, as well as the Oilers positive valuation of him.
Perhaps Edmonton could afford to pay him closer to $2M, especially if they get another year on the deal. As the cap increases and Emberson gets better, it could become a steal of a contract.
The Oilers can get their deal done within the next few days as the holiday season has wrapped up, the team is in Edmonton, and have a few days off before their next game. Hopefully, Emberson is signed soon.
