Moments ago in tonight's game between the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs, former Oilers defender Philip Broberg had to be helped off the ice after a leg injury.

Broberg was carrying the puck along the wall and took a hit from an unlikely player in Mitch Marner. Broberg's leg got tangled up with Marner on the way down, and Broberg seemed to land awkwardly on his left leg. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Blues have said Broberg will not return to tonight's game.

Upon closer look of the video, it looks like Marner fell down on top of Broberg's leg or ankle. Broberg was down on the ice for several moments before being helped off the ice and back to the dressing room by his teammates and trainers.

The immediate concern with an injury like this is structural damage from a torn ligament, but hopefully it's something more minor like a sprain.

It's incredibly unfortunate for Broberg who is having an incredible start to his first season with the St. Louis Blues. Broberg had requested a trade out of Edmonton last year because he believed he wasn't getting enough ice time. When given a top four role with the Blues, he's immediately arrived as an high end two-way player. Broberg has been entrusted top minutes on the Blues, the top powerplay, and is making good on that opportunity.

In 11 games this season, Broberg has scored an incredible 2 goals and 9 points. He always had shown that offensive potential as a prospect, but unfortunately, the Oilers lost him just as he was developing. Hopefully his fresh start this season isn't threatened by a significant long-term injury.
