The NHL's Metropolitan Division playoff competition now has more than five teams, including the Washington Capitals, who currently hold the Metro's top wildcard spot with the Pittsburgh Penguins following them by only one point. Both the Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders are just two points away from securing the first wild card place, and knocking out the Capitals.

Tonight's game between the Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes, the second-best team in the whole NHL, is a must-win for the Capitals, and stealing two points would be huge. They could easily lose their playoff position if they face a loss.

It will be moredifficult as Washington Capitals senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan said, Alexander Ovechkin has temporarily left the NHL to Capitals due toa significant family matter involving a loved one's health.

Washington Capitals senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today that captain Alex Ovechkin will be away from the team to attend to a family matter and the health of a loved one.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ovechkin family.
