Edmonton Oilers have placed defenceman Markus Niemelainen on NHL waivers, allowing his potential assignment to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
Chris Johnston of TSN reported the move: "Placed on NHL waivers today: Markus Niemelainen (EDM)."
This means Mattias Ekholm, who has been missing and Niemelainen has been replacing, is ready to return to action for tomorrow's game as the Oilers get a second shot at the Canucks.
Niemelainen, 25, featured in 23 NHL games last season without recording points but had a more productive stint with the Bakersfield Condors, tallying seven points (two goals, five assists) and a plus-four rating in 30 games.
Other NHL teams have until 2 p.m. ET on Saturday to claim Niemelainen, with the Anaheim Ducks holding the first right of refusal. This move raises questions about his future role within the Oilers' organization.
