Sources have reported that Ilya Lyubushkin, a Buffalo Sabres defenseman, will not be wearing a special Pride Night celebration jersey during warmups before their game against the Montreal Canadiens. Lyubushkin has cited new legislation introduced by Russian President Vladimir Putin as his reason for opting out. The legislation, which prohibits the promotion or "praise" of anything other than heterosexuality and the public expression of "non-traditional sexual preferences that are not normal," is concerning in 2023.

Sadly, Lyubushkin is not the first Russian player who has refused to participate in Pride celebrations due to political reasons. It is disappointing that this issue still exists.

However, the Buffalo Sabres have managed this delicate public relations issue with tact and sensitivity. They have released a statement expressing their support for both Lyubushkin and the LGBTQ+ community, and they remain committed to advocating for marginalized groups in hockey. They hope their Pride Night event, along with similar events across the league, will inspire meaningful conversations and encourage support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
