Although it is sometimes stated that hockey is merely a business, there are always other viewpoints, especially in the instance of trades that occur unexpectedly.
It happened this week when the Detroit Red Wings sent Tyler Bertuzzi, a lifetime Red Wing, to the Boston Bruins in return for a 2024 first-round selection and a 2025 fourth-round pick. Bertuzzi has lived in Detroit for seven years and has formed close bonds with the teammates that surround him, whom he refers to as brothers.
This has had a significant impact on Dylan Larkin, the Red Wings captain, who was close friends with forward Tyler Bertuzzi and just dealt with his departure. When Larkin was questioned about the deal, he was unable to contain his feelings and they all came out:
Even though Larkin signed an 8-year contract for $69 million and change, it is difficult to understand how he is currently feeling since it truly does show that money isn't everything all the time.
