The 2022-2023 NHL playoffs will go down in history as one of the most controversial and most scrutinized to referees and penalties called or not called. Almost every series had plays or non-calls missed or just downright nasty plays that I have seen in all the time I've watched the sport.

One play in particular that drew a lot of anger from the Edmonton Oilers fan base was the lumberjack slash from Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo against Oilers superstar forward Leon Draisaitl. The slash was obvious and downright dirty and unnecessary.

Pietrangelo faced a penalty of slashing with a 5 min major and a game misconduct. He then received a one-game suspension.
But the Vegas Golden Knights, now the Stanley Cup champs, MVP Jonathan Marchessault sat down with the Spitting Chiclets Podcast and discussed the brutal slash that his teammate did.

Fortunately for Draisaitl, his arm was not seriously injured or broken. In the NHL, however, such plays are not necessary and need to be more tightly controlled. Players cannot use their sticks as weapons and do moves like those against superstars, let alone NHL players.

I felt that he deserved more than a one-game suspension for that move.
