Hockey continues to evolve as a sport, as the game becomes faster and collisions are bound to happen accidentally or otherwise. The NHL is doing its best to eliminate dangerous hits and hits from behind, as they can end careers and cost teams man games.

The San Jose Sharks took on the New York Islanders last night, and a dangerous collision happened late in the first period.

As you see, defenseman Matt Benning goes behind the net to retrieve the puck and Islander forward Cal Clutterbuck delivers a dangerous hit from behind driving him into the boards.

When officials look at this they will consider, if the attacking player will have time to stop and if the defending player is in a vulnerable position.

Clutterbuck clearly saw Benning's numbers and finished his check, carelessly, and was given a penalty for his check from behind. Benning suffered no damage luckily, as he returned to the ice after being removed from the bench.

If George Parros is to salvage any kind of reputation, Clutterbuck will be suspended for this hit from behind, and the NHL will regulate hits like this to maximize penalization and incentivize players to consider the safety and health of their fellow players.
