Patrick Roy Reveals Why He Cannot Return to The NHL
Patrick Roy, an NHL legend and Hall of Fame goaltender, holds a record that solidifies his status as one of the greatest goalies in league history. Despite his accomplishments, Roy acknowledges the impact of his past actions on future opportunities. After winning the Memorial Cup Championship with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, he openly recognizes his past mistakes, including his departure from a previous NHL executive role, which may hinder his chances of landing a similar position again.
"It's hard for me to get a job because of the way I left Colorado. I know I made some bad choices. I know the way I left, everything I did, could have an effect on today's perspective on myself. I have to live with that. I know that I've learned from my mistakes. The past is the past but sometimes, you have to live with your past. I understand the situation."
Reflecting on his time with the Colorado Avalanche, Roy takes ownership of his errors and acknowledges the negative impression he left when he left the team. He admits that his departure from Colorado has made it difficult to secure employment, understanding the consequences of his past decisions. However, he has learned from his missteps and accepts the situation at hand.
"I understand now, better than ever, that you can't be in management and coach a team at the same time. If you're the coach, you coach. If you're GM, that's what you do."
Following his exit from Colorado, Roy took on coaching and GM roles with the Remparts. However, his abrupt resignation as coach and VP of hockey operations with the Avalanche in 2018 remains significant. Roy emphasizes the importance of separating management and coaching responsibilities, having gained clarity on this issue during his time with Colorado and Joe Sakic, who was the Executive VP and GM at the time and is now the President of Hockey Operations.
