Bonino, now 35 years old, signed with the Rangers this offseason for a one year, $800K contract. He struggled significantly, scoring just 1 goal and 4 assists through 45 games. Just before the All-Star Break, the Rangers placed Bonino on waivers and he cleared, meaning he was to report to the AHL.
However, now Rangers insider Peter Baugh is reporting that the Rangers and Bonino took the break to reflect on whose career. Bonino decided to inform the Rangers he wasn't going to report to the AHL, and asked for his contract to be terminated.
If this is the end of Bonino's career, it'll be a disappointing end to his career, but he'll be down on his own terms. Bonino played a total of 868 games in his career, and was an essential part to the Penguins Stanley Cup win in 2016, actually leading the team in playoff assists. At this point in the season and with his showing in New York, it's unlikely Bonino receives another contract offer this year, and instead decides to retire.
