For several decades, the esteemed figure known as the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, has been a favourite player for many hockey fans. The remarkable numbers he achieved, from his time as an Edmonton Oiler to his retirement with the Rangers, were truly exceptional. The numerous records he broke, many of which still stand today, are particularly impressive for an undrafted player.

It's intriguing to gain insight into his perspective on who he considers his favourite player in today's NHL. While many might assume it's Connor McDavid, given their close relationship and McDavid's current superstar status with the Oilers, Gretzky revealed in an interview with TNT that his favourite player in the NHL today is Mathew Barzal, the center for the New York Islanders.

Barzal was selected in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2015 entry draft. He came highly touted as a future superstar winger, and although he is now 26 years old, he has spent his entire career with the New York Islanders. Across 420 games, he has scored 105 goals and tallied 257 assists, accumulating a total of 362 points. He maintains a +4 rating and has amassed 214 penalty minutes.

While he has only crossed the 80-point threshold once in his career, typically ranging between 50 and 65 points per season, watching Barzal in action is always entertaining. However, there are clear expectations that he must elevate his performance, especially considering the substantial salary he is earning.

This upcoming season marks the first under his contract extension, an 8-year, $73.2 million deal, resulting in a cap hit of $9.15 million, which he signed.
