The NHL has finally joined the trend of NFTs, digital collectibles backed by the league.

Late to the game once again, the NHL is launching two series of NFTs, partnering with Upper Deck to provide these digital collectibles on the blockchain.
A non-fungible token is a unique digital identifier that is recorded on a blockchain, and is used to certify ownership and authenticity. It cannot be copied, substituted, or subdivided. The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the blockchain and can be transferred by the owner, allowing NFTs to be sold and traded.
While NFTs have already faced market challenges and the failure of NBA's Top Shot NFT should have served as a warning, the NHL seems undeterred. The league's entry into the NFT market comes amidst skepticism, with critics viewing it as another example of the NHL's slow adaptation to trends in the digital world.
