Allan Mitchell of The Athletic recently analyzed Yamamoto's struggles and concluded that the Oilers would need to agree to a new contract at a much cheaper price if they hope to keep him in Edmonton, a MUCH cheaper deal. If not, the two camps may go their separate ways..
Despite showing promise in his young career, Yamamoto's performance this season has been lackluster. He managed to score only 10 goals and 15 assists in 58 games, and has yet to register a point in the Oilers' current playoff series against the Kings. With his contract expiring, the Oilers must weigh the potential of his future performance against the cost of keeping him on the team. Only time will tell what decision the Oilers will ultimately make.
