The great debate begins: Oilers have a better defensemen than Makar
For several years, the analytics debate has been a hot topic in the NHL since it was introduced as a way for scouts and general managers to analyze talent using a computer and formulas. Many NHL fans are familiar with terms such as Corsi, Fenwick, Zone Starts, and many others.
Don't ask me how it works because I don't have a clue, to be honest.
However recently, @Oileranalytics on Twitter brought out a chart showing that Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard, will surpass avalanche superstar defenseman, Cale Makar.
In certain scenarios, Bouchard's numbers will be higher than Makar's based on a series of graphs. An EV TOI at the top compares Bouchard to Colorado defensemen and gives a higher number for Bouchard.
In my opinion, however, I'm not sure if I were to believe this as I feel that Cale Makar is a dynamic star-studded defenseman who plays like an offensive forward and continues to show numbers that are off the charts.
Bouchard, who was drafted in the first round 10th pick overall in 2018 is certainly having a good season this year, playing 69 games with four goals, and 25 assists for 29 points.
He has 28 penalty minutes and 8 power-play points.
Bouchard seems to be finding his game again as the Oilers continue their push to solidify a playoff spot for the upcoming NHL playoffs.
