Niederreiter was set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, coming off his contract signed with Nashville that also paid him $4M annually.
Now 31 years old, Niederreiter has mostly turned out to be a scoring third line winger over his career - although the Islanders may have had higher hopes when they selected him 10th overall in the 2010 NHL draft. This season with the Jets, he's had some success scoring 6 goals and 14 points in 23 games, but he still only averages around 15 minutes of ice time a night.
For a veteran third-line scorer with a 40 point ceiling, $4M feels like a big overpay - especially when Niederreiter's game won't translate too well in the playoffs. He does have playoff experience, playing in 87 career playoff games, but only recording 34 points. Perhaps there's a slight Winnipeg' tax added to the contract.
