Bettman explains NHL decision to reinstate disgraced Blackhawks executives
On July 1st, the NHL reinstated Stan Bowman, Joel Quenneville, and Al MacInnis after being banned by the league for their role in the Chicago Blackhawks scandal.
Today, the NHL released a statement explaining that commissioner Gary Bettman has met with each of the individuals, and have seen that they've taken personal steps to learn from their mistakes. Insider Chris Johnston shared the NHL's message.
"While it is clear that, at the time, their responses were unacceptable, each of these three individuals (Messrs. Bowman, Maclsaac and Quenneville) has acknowledged that and used his time away from the game to engage in activities which, not only demonstrate sincere remorse for what happened, but also evidence greater awareness of the responsibilities that all NHL personnel have, particularly personnel who are in positions of leadership. Moreover, each has made significant strides in personal improvement by participating in myriad programs, many of which focused on the imperative of responding in effective and meaningful ways to address alleged acts of abuse. The League expects that they will continue this commitment in any future capacity with the NHL and/or one of our Clubs." The NHL said.
General Manager Stan Bowman has been heavily connected to the vacant job for the Edmonton Oilers in recent weeks. According to Frank Seravalli, Bowman was on Edmonton's radar when they decided to hire Jeff Jackson.
Plenty of Oilers fans have been extremely vocal about the team not hiring Stan Bowman, for obvious reasons. The public trust is still broken towards Bowman for being behind a heinous cover-up. The NHL should be a privileged league to work in, and many fans think Bowman doesn't deserve that, even if he's taken steps to be reinstated. Not only that, but there's plenty more GM candidates who have actually been working in hockey for the last few years.
The next General Manager hire needs to be at the top of the list for priorities for Jeff Jackson at the moment. He's done a fantastic job so far with player moves, and if he can hire the right GM, fhe Oilers will be on their way to another Cup Final at least.
