Moments ago, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Philadelphia Flyers will be placing goaltender Cal Petersen on waivers.

Now 29 years old, Petersen once showed promise as a legitimate young starting goalie with the Los Angeles Kings, posting over a .900 save percentage in three straight seasons. After signing a contract extension for three years at $5M, Petersen became nearly unplayable, and was part of the three way trade to send Sean Walker to LA, and Ivan Provorov to Columbus.

Petersen now has had two years with the Flyers organization, and has shown no sign of finding his game again. In 5 games with the Flyers this season, he has an abysmal .867 save percentage. He also hasn't been much better in the AHL.

In all likelihood, Cal Petersen's NHL career will be over after just 106 games between the Kings and Flyers. He once showed promise as a young emerging starter, and now the Flyers can only hope to bury a portion of his salary in the minors with this roster move. Due to his salary, it's extremely unlikely anyone places a claim on Petersen.
