BREAKING: Vancouver Canucks announce contract extension for Elias Pettersson
Moments ago, news broke across the NHL that the Vancouver Canucks and Elias Pettersson have finally come to an agreement to sign an extension. According to Pierre LeBrun, Pettersson will be signing for eight years, $11.6M.
This contract finally comes after a long standoff between the player and the team. Pettersson had expressed that he wasn't interested in negotiating during the season, but yesterday it was reported that the Canucks had a trade on the table for Pettersson in Carolina, which motivated him to get the contract done.
The contract will make Pettersson the fifth highest player in the NHL, which is honestly a decent contract considering how elite of a player he is and the increasing salary cap. In 62 games this season, Pettersson's scored 29 goals and 75 points, on his way to his second 100 point season.
By signing Pettersson, the Canucks have extended their window to win for at least the next eight years - this is a fantastic contract for them. Now comes the expectation of playoff success.
