The Calgary Flames have announced that the team will lose forward Anthony Mantha for the rest of the season as he recovers from an ACL injury.

The injury came in a game against the Montreal Canadiens on November 5th. Mantha took what seemed to be a routine hit, but must've fallen to the ice in a way that caused the injury.

It's always tough to see a routine play cause such a significant injury for players, and it's a reminder of how dangerous the game is. Specifically ACL injuries are very tough to recover from, and players often have trouble finding their game again afterward.

Mantha had signed a one year contract with the Flames last offseason for $3.5M, and was off to a fantastic start with 7 points in 13 games. He probably wasn't a part of the Flames long-term plans, but if he continued this rate of scoring, they likely would've traded him at the deadline for a great return.

The Calgary Flames had a hot start to the season, looking to prove doubters wrong who projected them to finish near last in the NHL. After winning 5 of their first 6 games, the Flames have now lost 7 of their last 9 - looking more like the rebuilder everyone expected.

With elevated ice time this year, Mantha would've helped the Flames score a bit annd keep them competitive, before getting them a future asset back at the deadline. He's surely not a core player, but this injury will really hurt the Flames.

Mantha is set to undergo surgery later this week. Even Oilers fans will wish him the best in recovery from this brutal injury.
