Early this morning, the Calgary Flames announced that they've signed defenceman Jarred Tinordi to a professional tryout offer.

Tinordi is a 32 year old left shot defenceman with only 205 NHL games played, but was once a highly touted prospect. After being drafted in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens in 2010, Tinordi struggled to break through to the NHL level for some time. He's since bounced around from multiple teams and in between the NHL and AHL, playing for the Arizona Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, and Chicago Blackhawks. His last two years with the Blackhawks saw his most consistent playing time in his career, playing 96 games in that time.

Tinordi was potentially an option for the Edmonton Oilers as well, who are believed to be signing a defenceman to a PTO soon. Insider Bob Stauffer had suggested that the Oilers may sign a defenceman with a history with Kris Knoblauch, and Tinordi had played under the coach with the 2021-22 Hartford Wolf Pack. Given that criteria, it seems that Travis Dermott is now the most likely candidate for an Oilers tryout.

This is the second tryout signing for the Calgary Flames on the backend already. Earlier this week, the Flames signed former Oiler Tyson Barrie to a tryout contract. Previously, it was heavily rumoured that Barrie would love a return to Edmonton on a tryout contract - but he may get more opportunity on the rebuilding Flames than the contending Oilers. Barrie is now 33 years old and looking to bounce back after a tough year with the Nashville Predators after being dealt by the Oilers.

With a few value moves before training camp begins, the Calgary Flames are making decent moves that will she able to help them through what could be a tough season. The Flames are projected to finish near last place in the NHL this season, so they may be hoping to turn these tryout contracts into valuable assets to trade at the deadline.
