Holloway was trying to block a routine point shot that instead rode up and made direct contact with his neck. He didn't immediately seem to have a bad reaction, but his condition deteriorated soon on after. Seemingly on the bench, Holloway collapsed on his side and needed to be held up by his teammates.
With just over a minute left in the first period, both teams were sent back to the dressing room to recoup and allow the medical team to get Holloway off the ice. Holloway was carried off on a stretcher, likely heading to a St. Louis hospital. Whenever a game is delayed due to an injury close to the period, it's not good news for the severity of the injury.
According to reports, Holloway was immediately placed in an ambulance after being stretchered off. It's extremely scary to think that the situation has escalated this quickly. Thankfully, he's now awake and alert.
Holloway was in the first season with the St. Louis Blues after joining the team on an offer sheet last offseason. Holloway had played his entire career previously with the Edmonton Oilers. In his first 12 games with the Blues the 23 year old forward has made good on the new contract, scoring 4 goals and 6 points.
It looks to be an extremely scary situation for Dylan Holloway, which is absolutely gut wrenching news for a quality young person and player. Hopefully Holloway gets through this horrific looking injury, and is able to return to the ice sometime soon.
