According to the report, Jeff Marek shared inside predictions with media member and former NHL scout Mark Seidel. Media always learn about draft picks moments before the official pick to prepare for their broadcasts, and Marek was just sharing that information with Seidel who also works media. Seidel shared some of the knowledge on social media in the form of insider tweets, and although no one involved placed any bets, the Gaming Commission is reportedly concerned about the leakage of this information.
Hearing this as the reason for Marek's firing at Sportsnet has bewildered fans and other members of the media. Many have called out Sportsnet for siding with the concerns of an annoyingly persistent gambling industry over one of their veteran personalities. Marek has been providing great coverage for decades, and this incident that shouldn't even be considered a transgression costing him a job isn't right.
It's incredibly disappointing to see a great reporter like Marek lose his job for Sportsnet to appease concerns from the gambling industry - especially when making those reports is literally his job.
Undoubtedly Marek will land another show elsewhere or start his own that would likely be supported by the previous cast, but losing the current iteration of the 32 Thoughts Podcast is tough for fans. This decision will make an already unpopular company even more unpopular.
