The Edmonton Oilers will have an extremely important salary cap decision with Evander Kane's return from injury, and new reports from an NHL Insider suggest Kane will return after the regular season.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli has earlier reported that Kane will miss the entire season with this injury, and is now updating his reports.

NHL Insider updates Oilers salary cap with Evander Kane's injury

According to a new update from Frank Seravalli, the Oilers will be operating under the assumption that Kane will not return until the playoffs.
This means that the team will be able to spend his salary cap hit at the trade deadline, and the Oilers will be able to add his $5.125M salary on the blue line instead.
»The Oilers have all the supporting documentation they need to keep Evander Kane out till the Playoffs. The Oilers are still accruing cap space. The question is what are they going to do with their flexibility?"
The Edmonton Oilers surely miss Kane's 24 goals and team leading hits from last season, but the team has been able to survive without him and may be even better once they add a player with his salary.

How Much Salary Cap Space Will the Edmonton Oilers have at the trade deadline?

Seravalli has continuously reported that the Oilers are now operating under the assumption Kane will not return until the playoffs. PuckPedia has also confirmed the Oilers would be able to access accrued cap space and LTIR.
» Therefore, if Kane is out for year & #LetsGoOilers use LTIR to exceed cap, they would have his $5.125M LTIR pool available + what's been accrued. As of today, $234K is accrued, which is $472K annual cap hit if utilized today or $1.07M at deadline.

This means the Oilers could add $6.195M in cap hit at the trade deadline. With that amount of flexibility, the Oilers will be able to make a significant trade if they have the assets.
Edmonton will need further reports on Kane's health closer to the trade deadline, but it appears that with his latest knee surgery, he'll be out and the Oilers can spend his salary in trades.
