If Draisaitl truly takes a discount on an eight year contract, the price will come in under $13M. With the salary cap increasing however, he will become the highest paid player in the NHL and surpass Matthews' value of $13.25M. A value in between 13-13.5 on a long term deal would still be fantastic for both the Oilers and Draisaitl - realistically, the Oilers should be happily paying him whatever he demands. If he takes a discount, it shows true selflessness and drive to win.
Regardless of the contract details, Oilers fans will be ecstatic to see Draisaitl confirmed to be staying in Edmonton for his entire career. Hopefully, McDavid follows right behind him. With these two locked up long-term, the Oilers will be competing for Stanley Cups for years to come.
