In a social media post just minutes ago, the Utah Hockey Club laid out their contest to win a paid internship this season in their analytics department. Any interested fan must draft a 5 page paper on a hockey topic of interest using analytics, and the top choices will make a presentation to senior management. The deadline for submissions is August 23rd.
It's incredible to see an avenue for passionate and knowledgeable hockey fans to get into the industry without prior experience. If you think you really know hockey and analytics, why not give it a shot?
Some of hockey's rising influential figures are on the forefront of the analytics movement. The Edmonton Oilers just hired 23 year old Erik Elenz to be a video coach and analytics coordinator, considered to be one of the up and coming analytics figures in the sport. He's extremely young and fresh out of College, but that's the type of person teams are looking for nowadays.
Analytics are undoubtedly the future of hockey, but the eye test still has a place as well. If you're a fan looking to work in hockey though, you're definitely going to need to brush up on your math skills!
