The Winnipeg Jets offered prospects Rutger McGroarty, Cole Perfetti, and a draft pick in exchange for Martin Necas of the Carolina Hurricanes, but Seravalli said the deal fell apart for unknown reasons.
For whatever reason the deal fell apart, that's an extremely tough break for the Carolina Hurricanes. The Jets offer consisted of two of their highest tier prospects and an additional draft pick, which would be a phenomenal return for Necas who had a down season with only 53 points.
It's interesting as well that Necas reportedly wasn't going to sign in Buffalo, but that didn't come out about Winnipeg. Obviously it's harder to attract star players over the long-term in Winnipeg, so for the Jets to make a move to acquire Necas with a contract extension in place would make sense. Even for the Jets, it's tough this deal fell through. They'll certainly look for another suitor to take Rutger McGroarty, their first round draft pick from 2022 who is demanding a trade due to lack of ice time.
All this trade speculation has now come off the board with Necas signing a two year contract extension in Carolina. At least for one more full season, Necas will be a big part of the offence for one of the most consistent teams in the NHL.
At this point in the NHL offseason it's always interesting to hear about the behind-the-scenes of trading and the transactions that come close to happening. For every hockey fan's sake, hopefully a big trade does shake loose soon to give us something to talk about!
