Stanley was a first round draft pick of the Jets in 2016, and between then and now he only really has one thing to offer - his massive size of 6'7 on the blueline. The Winnipeg Jets will pay Stanley $1.25M for the next two years on his contract.
The contract isn't a gross overpayment or anything, but Stanley very clearly lacks the actual skills to be an NHL player, and is only in the league for his size. He's obviously a defensive defenceman, but his production of only 22 points in 139 NHL games is a little rough.
Plenty of Jets fans went online to share their frustration with the signing, wishing that their team would pursue other options other than Stanley to actually improve their blue-line. Many fans say that Stanley is not even an NHL calibre defenceman.
It's totally on brand for hockey teams to overvalue players with height and this can irritate fans, but the reality is that these players are still effective - especially in playoff hockey. We'll see if Stanley can use his physicality to make this deal worth it, or if he'll be a defensive liability yet again next year.
