NHL training camps opened across the league today, and still fresh on everyone's mind the shocking passing of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.

A number of star players were asked about their thoughts on Gaudreau today, and Matthew Tkachuk gave a standout response. Tkachuk was clearly emotional reflecting on his relationship with Johnny and his legacy in hockey, and spoke at length about how lucky he was to be his teammate in Calgary.

»Out of all the great things that happened this summer, it's almost overshadowed by what has happened. These last couple weeks, it's been a terrible time. Really has. It's the saddest thing seen or heard, whatever. Being able to go to the service, it just breaks your heart. Johnny's one of my favourite teammates I've ever played with. He's such a great friend . . .

I'll have memories with him that will last forever. I just can't help but think of his parents, Meredith, and the kids. It was a very tough time that week and at that funeral. He'll always be with us . . . His memory will go on forever. My memory of him will go on forever.»
- Matthew Tkachuk

The Gaudreau brothers were tragically struck by a suspected drunk driver on the night of August 29th, the day before their sister's wedding. The entire hockey community has been pouring out in mourning for the brothers, from fan memorials at arenas to players like Tkachuk openly grieving.

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today their plans to honour Gaudreau throughout the season. There will be moments of silence held in their first games, as well as a commemorative helmet patch for the two brothers in the preseason. During the regular season, the Blue Jackets will all wear a patch for number 13 on their jerseys in memory of Johnny. Not only that, the Blue Jackets will keep Gaudreau's stall set up in the locker room.

These are incredible gestures from the Blue Jackets this season, and it's incredible to see the hockey community come together for something much bigger than the game. Everyone in hockey will always remember the Gaudreau brothers.
