According to a new report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Nick Cousins will be signing a one year contract with the Ottawa Senators for $800K.
Cousins was drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2011 NHL Draft, and has gone on to play 592 career games with 6 different teams. He's not a scoring threat, only scoring 15 points in 69 games last year. In the last few years, especially with the Florida Panthers, Cousins evolved to become one of the most notorious pests across the NHL. According to a poll from the Athletic, players voted Cousins to be the most punchable face' in the league.
It's surprising to see that Cousins could only attract a one year contract for league minimum on a team that has only a faint hope at making the playoffs, given the fact he's just coming off a Stanley Cup. Cousins has ticked off plenty of star players across the league as the Panthers have dominated the last two years, and perhaps his reputation stunted some offers in free agency.
Expect Cousins to stick to his role as a pest as he joins a team with a similar reputation in the Ottawa Senators. The team hasn't been competitive enough to make the playoffs in years, but they've certainly been frustrating to play against for their opponents. Cousins will only add to that reputation, and make Ottawa a truly annoying team to play against every time.
