Now 38 years old and with two years left on his contract with the Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin is fully within range of beating Gretzky's goal record - if he can keep up to speed.
New photos emerged today of Ovechkin that have fans seriously concerned about his conditioning and performance for the next two seasons. In the pictures, Ovechkin looks a little extra chunky.
Ovechkin has always been a physical force with incredible strength throughout his career. He's measured up all the way to 260 pounds in his career, but it's always been in hard muscle. Already slowing down with age, Ovechkin can't fall behind on his conditioning if he wants to keep pace and break Gretzky's goal record.
Last season Ovechkin was quiet for a vast majority of the year, but still found enough hot stretches to score another 31 goals in 79 games. He only needs 42 goals over the next two years to beat Gretzky's record of 894, but with age fighting against him, it could be a close call. Some fans think Ovechkin can still break the record with his raw talent, and others think this is a sign he could be falling off.
Over the next couple seasons, counting down every Ovechkin goal will become an event as he chases down the lauded Gretzky record. Do you think he can beat the record? Let us know in the poll below!
