The NHL will take just over a week off in February of this season to play the international tournament in Montreal and Boston. Tickets will go on sale for the games in Montreal on October 29 and in Boston on October 30.
Even if fans won't be buying tickets to the game, we still got the first look at the new international jerseys for the tournament. Oilers superstar Connor McDavid was modelling the Team Canada jersey prominently, while Auston Matthews showed off the USA's. Sweden and Finland are unfortunately a bit too hidden.
Plenty of fans immediately took issue with the Team Canada jersey. Fans don't seem to be fond of the text that says Canada, and the simplistic approach of just a plain red jersey with stripes and a leaf. Team Canada looks to be the only ones with an advertisement on the jersey as well, with a Rogers patch on the shoulder.
While some fans are having some bad reactions to the Canada jersey, it doesn't seem overly offensive. At the end of the day, who cares what they're wearing when Connor McDavid, Nathan Mackinnon, and Sidney Crosby are going to pair up on the same team? International hockey has been something fans and players have been sorely missing for years, and it's absolutely fantastic it's back.
Each of the four teams involved will play three games in a round robin tournament, accumulating points for the results of their games to decide who advances to a one-game final. There will be shootouts to force decisions faster, instead of continuous overtime. It's not a perfect return to international hockey, but it's a good warmup for returning to the Olympics in 2026.
