Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Canucks are leaning toward a major roster change, likely a trade, to solve the feud between Miller and Pettersson - as well as the drama that comes with it.
According to a new report from Elliotte Friedman on Saturday's Headlines today, the Canucks could possibly trade Elias Pettersson, JT Miller, or both. In return, they're seeking a centreman as the primary piece.
It's shocking to hear that the Canucks are really going to move on from a star player because of locker room issues, but hearing that they could potentially move both players is a shocking new twist as well.
While there have been some concerns about the Canucks defence after the injuries to Quinn Hughes, Filip Hronek, and the rest of their group underperforming, a center is the correct priority for the Canucks.
If they really move on from Pettersson or Miller, the Canucks will suddenly look extremely weak yo the middle. They'll need a star level centreman in return if they trade both players, and if they want to make the playoffs this year, it needs to be a good return.
As of now, JT Miller appears to be the more likely player to be dealt with the New York Rangers emerging as a destination for him. Any trade with him could be complicated by his no-move clause driving down the price.
If the Canucks do end up deciding that a trade is absolutely necessary to save their locker room, they may be looking at a disappointing return for Miller. Regardless of what happens, their team is already weakened by these dramatic reports.
The Canucks can't allow these reports to continue floating for months on end until the trade deadline. If move materializes, it must come soon to actually save the locker room, otherwise Vancouver is deliberately creating problems for themselves by entertaining trade reports.
