NHL insider has major update on Leon Draisaitl contract talks with Oilers
On today's edition of OilersNow with Bob Stauffer, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that the Oilers and Leon Draisaitl have officially begun contract talks.
SERAVALLI: The next iteration of this, when everyone's locked up - and I'm saying when because to me, it's not if -
STAUFFER: Woah, you're saying they're gonna get all three of those guys signed?
SERAVALLI: I believe the Oilers have already begun discussions with Draisaitl's camp . . . My point is, two years from now when the Oilers take the ice, [McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard] are gonna add up to $40M.
Insider believes Oilers will re-sign McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard
It's incredible news to hear for Oilers fans that all players are committed to this team and to winning in Edmonton, and especially that Draisaitl has begun negotiations for his next contract. Draisaitl will be 30 years old when his next contract begins, and he's likely looking for an eight year deal that only the Oilers can give him.
That said, Seravalli reported that Draisaitl will be seeking the higher end of his salary projection of $14M. It was reported previously that he may take a discount of $12.5M on a long term deal, which would equal the amount of he could get in free agency. Also, Bouchard seeking up to $10M on his next contract is 2M more than Stauffer has initially reported.
Seravalli continued to say that McDavid is ultimately committed to staying with the Oilers, and that will be a massive draw to keep Draisaitl and Bouchard as well. They've got a taste of the Stanley Cup this year, and perhaps with this experience they can come back to have another shot at it next year. If the make a miracle comeback to win the Cup this year, it'd be a crime to ever separate this team at all.
