NHL insider Elliotte Friedman tweeted today the pending sale of the Tampa Bay Lightning which holds a value close to $2 billion making this the largest sale in NHL history.

Friedman has explained that this deal is not complete and that the daily operations of the team will remain the same. This sale seems to be a complicated matter with multiple stages in play as current Lightning owner Jeff Vinik will still retain most of the operational control for several years.

He will also hold a large stake in the new ownership that will be sold to Doug Ostrover who is the CEO of Blue Owl Capital. For many years, the Lightning had been in financial trouble until Vinik chose to purchase the team for $170 million US.

This will be a significant windfall for Vinik as it appears several NHL teams have been sold over the past two years which included the Ottawa Senators for $950 million and the Arizona Coyotes who became the Utah hockey club as the organization has moved to Salt Lake City which was sold for just over $1 billion dollars.
