It's been reported at the end of the season that Evander Kane had been battling a hip injury that has required several consultations with doctors, therapists and other medical staff to determine how to resolve his troubles.
Recently, the team is hoping that Kane we'll have surgery to repair the problem which will give the Oilers two benefits, having one of their star players healed and ready to play at a later date and to give the team much needed cap relief.
It seems however, that Kane does not feel the same way and that he would like to try other measures rather than surgery and would like to pass his physical in September once training camp starts. This would prevent the team from getting long term injury reserve relief which would open over $5 million.
Kane's season had not gone according to plan as he had struggled at times especially down the stretch. Many pundits felt that the Oilers would put him on the trading block in an effort to get out from under the contract. But this was not the case, and the team held on to him.
The situation in Edmonton is changing rapidly after a strong start to their off season with key signings on July 1st to now potentially losing two of their young players to offer sheets which have been placed by the St Louis Blues.
If Kane doesn't have surgery and they do not have LTIR relief, the Oilers will need to make tough calls on how to construct their lineup for game one of the season.
