In a recent interview with Tony Brar, Oilers forward Corey Perry was thinking about retirement just prior to the Stanley Cup finals starting.
The 39-year-old right winger has seen his share of hockey as he was drafted in 2003 by the Anaheim Ducks. After a few years, he had his name etched on the Stanley Cup in 2007 after defeating the Ottawa Senators. Since then, he has played for several other teams and has been in an incredible five Stanley Cup finals with five different NHL teams.
«It's been a lot of fun,» shared Corey Perry. «The last few years, he's been around but I think now it's starting to kick in what's at stake.
But with all the accolades and the success comes father time. And it appears that Perry understands he is in the twilight of his career and that he must take his opportunities while he has them.
«If you get that opportunity and you do win, you have your day with [the Stanley Cup]. To have that day to spend with family and friends, that's what you're looking forward to. That's what you're putting your mindset towards. But at the same time, it's one step at a time. Take care of business first. Enjoy everything after that.»
Though his point production has dropped dramatically in these playoffs, he is still a force on the ice especially after his game-winning goal in Game 5. In 17 playoff games, he has scored one goal with two assists for three points.
After being scratched a game or two during the playoffs, some Frances felt that was the last we would see of Perry in these playoffs and potentially his career, but he prevailed and is still on the ice during this crucial time.
«I just wanted to work out and come to the rink with a smile on my face. Just be the same person. You don't change, you don't sulk, you don't walk around like it's the end of the world. You will have the opportunity to get your number called again and make a difference on the ice. When I got back (into the lineup), I was ready to play.»
Perry has not indicated when he intends to hang up his skates for good but many feel that this may be his last stop before retirement.
«I'm fortunate. Been fortunate to play on good teams. Maybe too many teams. I'm not getting any younger,» joked Perry.
«This could be my last kick at the can.»
He will get another chance to keep the Oilers season alive as game six will take place on Friday June 21st and puck drop will be 8:00 PM eastern.
